Synopsis

This story has been created following a series of interviews with Mexican children living in the countryside and the city. Fragments of their narratives serve as jumping off points for the creation of an entire universe, which contains within it little real and imaginary worlds. Like mirrors these worlds reflect who we are and all that we long to be. Karen (a little girl from the city) and Manuel (a little boy from the countryside) occupy center stage in this kaleidoscope of experiences. They describe to us their everyday lives, their dreams, their games and their fears. Their encounter with one another reveals many surprises. They are different and yet the same. They are unique. They are small. Their voices are those of everyone.

Description

Our story is told through puppets made from metal and wood found objects. The wood objects represent the universe of the countryside and the metal objects represent the city. Multimedia, in the form of videos and audio taken from interviews with children, gives the performance a documentary-feel and helps us to represent their fantastical universes. Live music on guitar, percussion, and a variety of other instruments provides another important element of the overall performance experience.

Trajectory

From the Countryside to the City was premiered for the National School Theater Program at the Esperanza Iris Theater in Mexico City, in 2017.
